Cashew
Cashew
The Cashew is a fruit that consists of a nut and an apple underneath. The apple is the part that is attached to the tree. The Cashew Apple is fleshy and its peel is yellowish and red in its cheek. It contains Iron, Potassium, Calcium, Vitamins A and C.
Cashew apples are juicy but somewhat astringent due to a high concentration of Tannin. The grayish fruit that encloses the nut contains toxic oils and must be avoided during processing.
According to botanists, though, the grayish "stem" is actually the fruit, and it encloses the kidney-shaped cashew nut that we're familiar with.
